Obituary for Frederick Woodburn Barrigar

Frederick Woodburn Barrigar
Rick, 68, died peacefully on 11 January, from cancer. He is survived by his brother Bob and Bob’s wife Evelyn; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and countless friends. His family are grateful to his friends for their dedicated support during his illness, and to the May Court nurses and staff for their attentive hospice care.
Rick was an avid sportsman, enjoying basketball, golf, and fishing. But his greatest love was hockey – until a few months before his death, he was typically on the ice twice every week.
Rick served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa in 2002-3, and was elected Lieutenant-Governor of Kiwanis for Eastern Canada and the Caribbean for 2004-5. Kiwanis International awarded him the Glen Bagnell Growth Award and a Mel Osborne Fellowship. Late last year, Kiwanis Ottawa established the Rick Barrigar Scholarship in his honour. For Kiwanis and privately, Rick devoted time and effort to charitable causes, including years of service to the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa.
Rick served in a number of sales-oriented positions, especially in the computer industry, during his working life. His most recent employer Coughlin & Associates Ltd. was especially supportive during his terminal illness.
Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), on Saturday, May 12th from 2:30pm until the Celebration of Rick’s Life Service at 3:30pm. Reception to follow. Rick did not request donations in his memory, but the Hospice at May Court, the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa and the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa would be worthy recipients.
