| Henry Trenholme Findlay - 01/29/2010 |
January 26, 2010 Henry Trenholme Findlay Henry Trenholme Findlay will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at the Perley Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre in Ottawa on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Born in 1916 Henry was the son of Montréal architect Francis Findlay and grandson of architect Robert Findlay. His mother was Mabel Trenholme, a Montreal nurse who served in France during World War I. Henry lived a full and energetic life in Westmount, Quebec, serving his country during WWII overseas in the Ordnance Corps of the Canadian Army, and then serving community interests in Montréal over the decades that followed. He was educated at McGill University, earning a B.A. by 1939 after which he began law studies at Université de Laval in Quebec City. This was interrupted by the war period and he resumed his law studies in 1946 at Université de Montréal, graduating in 1947. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1947. In his athletic years he was a passionate cross country skier and a successful competitive ski jumper. He was a stalwart member of the McGill University Red Bird Ski Club. He was proud to be member # 90. Henry married Dorothy Haskell in 1948. His progeny include two daughters, Karen and Janet, and a son, Graham. He leaves behind a loving family, including Dorothy who resides now in Ottawa, his sister Helen who remains resident in Westmount in the Findlay home, plus Karen, Janet and Brian Harkness, Graham, and grandchildren Jacqueline and Robert Harkness, and Jordan and Emma Findlay. He work career spanned 30 years, including an 18 year period as corporate counsel for the All Canada Assurance Federation, and then in private law practice in Montréal from 1969 until he retired in 1981. Henry was reliable and faithful in fulfilling his civic responsibilities, serving many years as an elder at Dominion Douglas Church in Westmount. He was always available to help those in need or crisis and he stood at the side of many friends as they faced their challenges. He served on the boards of several Montréal service groups including the Montreal City Mission and Canada–Korea Cultural Association. He provided free legal counsel to First Nations in Caughnawaga. He volunteered at the McGill Architectural Library and kept extensive records of the architectural work of his father and grandfather, Frank and Robert, respectively. He regularly donated blood to the Red Cross. He was proud of Canada’s war efforts and patriotically put on his medals to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies. He and Dorothy created a country home on Lac Cornu in the Laurentians. Henry will be missed by many friends who remember his work in clearing trails for skiing and hiking and his attention to forestry on the Valdurn lands. They will also remember his charming practice of wearing a tie while at work on his ancient Ford tractor, or at most other times, for that matter. In 2005 Henry and Dorothy moved to Ottawa to be closer to family. The past four years have included precious moments for the family in support of his courageous journey down the path of dementia. His life was blessed recently by wonderful caregivers at various facilities where he resided, including Park Place Seniors Residence, West End Villa Nursing Home and finally the Perley Rideau, which he entered only recently. He was supported constantly by Dorothy, his wife, companion, and caregiver of over 60 years, and this was only interrupted by her own health crisis mid-way through 2009. The family wishes to thank the many people who touched our lives and helped with Dad’s final months. We will miss his steady manner, religious faith, and love for family. He was a wall of strength during an era of changing moral values. One often sees the true value of a gem once it is gone. Henry was one of those. The Findlay family has had a private burial service for Henry, and welcomes contact from friends to talk about the wonderful life he lived. For those moved to offer a gift in his name, it was Henry’s wish that friends support the W. Herbert Moore Memorial Bursary for McGill University electrical engineering students. The address is Martlet House, 1430 Peel Street, Montréal, Quebec, H3A 3T3. |
