| Colette Gisèle Arnal - 07/13/2010 |
Colette Gisèle Arnal (June 12, 1958 – July 12, 2010 ) Passed away peacefully at home in Ottawa, Ontario. Colette Arnal was born in Ste Rose du Lac, Manitoba, the youngest child of Auguste Arnal (deceased) and Marthe Péloquin, sister to Marc and Michèle. After completing high school, Colette moved to Calgary where she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Western Canadian History and met several lifelong friends. She then joined the Federal Public Service in Calgary as a Citizenship Officer with the Department of Secretary of State and moved to Ottawa in 1987 where her talents as a policy analyst, writer and supervisor led her to positions of responsibility in a number of organizations, including the United Way, RCMP, Pearson Peacekeeping Centre, Policy Research Institute and, most recently Service Canada. Colette was an extraordinary public servant, whose commitment and devotion to serving her country was unsurpassed. She was a source of inspiration to many young public servants whom she mentored and supported through the years. Colette had a big heart – as big as they come. She met lots of wonderful people through her work, her extensive travels, and her volunteer activities with the Canadian Cancer Society, many of whom became true friends. Although she did not have children of her own, she lavished love on her niece Anu and nephews Gabriel and Daniel, and on the children of her many friends, in particular Lee, Alex and Jilliane, who loved this aunty who always had time for them and who always made them feel good. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, “aunty” and friend to those lucky enough to know her. She would have wanted special mention to be made of her sister Michèle and her Mom, and her friends who cared for her in her last moments. Her sister-in-law, Rashmi and brother Marc will miss her profoundly. She will be missed by many people but will find warmth in the embrace of her father whom she loved very much. A Memorial Mass will be Celebrated at the Church of the Blessed Sacrement, 194 Fourth Avenue (at Percy Street ), Ottawa, ON, on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 11 a.m. For those who wish, contributions in Colette’s memory may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society. |

Over four decades, generations grew up listening to The Bill Lee Show on CKOY/CKBY-FM and CFMO-FM. His beautiful voice was a comforting part of the Ottawa landscape. But his best work was done at home, raising six children (and spoiling sixteen grandchildren). A very public person on the air but a very private man at home, his greatest joy was the simple pleasure of being with family. Bill - husband of Doreen (Croswell); father of Mark (Carol), Roger (Kathy), Dean (Kellie), Janine (Bill), Nancy (Ken), Tara (Mark); Cherished Grandfather of Dane, Blair and Jasmine; Michael, Joey and Susy; Connor and Spencer; Billy and Julia; Amy Allison and Amanda; Jordan, Emilee and Tyler. Predeceased by his mother, Eliza Jane Plecan. Survived by his two sisters, Mary White and Grace Jones and his stepsister Donna Schofield (Mal). The family would like to thank Dr. Bencze, Dr. Laurie, Dr. Agboola, Dr. Hurdon and the wonderful nurses at the Ottawa General Hospital and Bayshore Home Care. Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave., at Richmond Rd. Friday 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Funeral Service to celebrate Bills life will be held at the Glen Cairn United Church 140 Abbeyhill Dr. Kanata on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre. "Come on Sam we're going home." |

| LCol (RET'D) Ralph Fraser MacDonald, CD - 07/18/2010 |
MacDonald, LCol (ret’d) Ralph Fraser, CD. Passed away quietly in Ottawa on July 16, 2010, at the age of 87. Ralph was born August 14, 1922, in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He joined the Canadian Army in 1942 and served overseas with both the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Demobilized in 1946, he entered University College at the University of Toronto where he met Elizabeth Rogers from Calgary. After graduating in 1949, he followed Elizabeth to Alberta and spent the summer working in the Leduc oilfields and hitchhiking to Calgary. That fall he entered Law School at the University of Alberta and in 1950 re-joined the Army in the Canadian Officer Training Corps. Ralph spent the summer of 1950 training at Longue Pointe in Montreal. Stranded by a railway strike, he cadged the first of many unofficial air force “training flights” to make it back to Calgary in time to marry Elizabeth. Commissioned in 1951, Ralph graduated from Law School a year later and joined the Regular Force, once again in the Ordnance Corps. After serving in Vancouver and back in Edmonton, he was called to the Alberta Bar in 1956 and transferred to the Judge Advocate General’s branch. Ralph’s more than thirty years of service as a legal officer took him to Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Lahr and finally back to Ottawa. Along the way, he was a minor hockey coach, Cub leader and Group Committee chair. One of his proudest accomplishments was the two years he spent as president of the Canadian Forces Europe senior hockey league. By 1988, when he retired at the age of 65, Ralph was the oldest member and last Second World War veteran serving in the Regular Force. He then began his second career, serving another ten years as a civilian in the Department of National Defence. In 1997, after a loving 47-year partnership, Ralph lost Elizabeth, and with her a large part of himself, following her 11 year struggle with cancer. Ralph was never happier than when with his family and friends, and was always eager to lend a helping hand. He loved meeting and getting to know new people, and sharing his own tales and the pride he took in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sons John (Judy) of Calgary, Robert (Claire) of Ottawa, and Murray (Barbara Hedman) of Navan, and his grandchildren Lindsay (Lawrence) and Robert (Valerie) of Calgary, Alexander and Iain of Ottawa and Caroline and Sarah of Navan. In addition to Elizabeth, he was predeceased by his parents John and Sarah MacDonald of Sydney, his brother Sandy and his sister Catherine MacKinley. Special thanks to the staff of Ward 4A at the Montfort Hospital for their gentle care. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, (at O’Connor), Ottawa on Wednesday, July 21 from 1pm, followed by a Service to Celebrate his life to be held in the Chapel at 2pm. | Murray George Stuart - 07/25/2010 |
|
Stuart, Murray George. Died suddenly in Montfort hospital in the early hours of Monday 19th July 2010, aged 60 years. Murray was born on 11th July 1950 in Liverpool, England. After education at private schools, he took a degree at North Staffordshire Polytechnic in Computer Engineering by means of a ‘sandwich’ course, involving a one year industrial placement with ICL. After graduating, he worked in Kent and then Preston, initially for Marconi-Elliott Avionic Systems (which was later to become part of British Aerospace). Thus started his working career in and around aviation, which matched his principal hobby – a love of aircraft, initially just civil aviation, but latterly also embracing military aircraft. The lure of better job prospects across the Atlantic for his skills and chosen profession proved strong and Murray moved to Canada in January 1975, starting work for CAE Electronics in Montreal. In April 1979, he moved to Litton Systems in Toronto, and then, in July 1995, with Litton to Ottawa, where he survived the various takeovers and buy-outs to end up working for L3-Communications. Murray’s love of most things to do with aircraft continued throughout his life. He was a regular visitor to air-shows, especially the annual show at Toronto – although increasing security risks made spectators at such events increasingly unwanted and unable to see much. In the UK, Murray would have been known as an ‘aircraft spotter’; but he preferred to think of himself as an ‘aviation enthusiast’. Both of Murray’s parents – Tim and Micki – pre-deceased him and he leaves a younger brother (Neil) and sister-in-law (Marguerite), who live in Derbyshire, England, and Marguerite’s two sons – Jonathan (who lives in Tanzania with his wife and two young children) and Matthew (who lives in Leamington Spa, England). He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by the family. And he was admired, respected and liked by friends and colleagues in all the places in Canada where he has lived and worked. There will be a service to celebrate his life at 11.00 AM on Friday 30th July 2010, at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, (at O’Connor), Ottawa; afterwards, you are invited to join the family for refreshments in the reception suite. Family flowers only please. In memory of Murray, friends and colleagues may wish to make a donation to their charity of choice, or to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre at The Ottawa Hospital. |

One of Canada’s outstanding pianists, teachers, and lecturers died July 23 at her home at the Palisades, at the age of 99. Predeceased by her husband, Charles Porter Wright, by her daughter, Merida Woodburn Sachs, her brother Cliff Alexander, and her nephew Jeffrey Lyon. Survived by four grandsons, Joel (Olga), David (Megan), Adam (Margarita), Matthew (Laurie), nieces Laurie Lyon, Colita Lyon Robinson, nephews Bruce, Don and Dana Lyon, great grandchildren Anya, Sasha, Jordan Charles, Merida, and her sister Phyllis Lyon (George Lyon). Born in Ottawa, Irene (nee Woodburn) started her musical career at an early age giving acclaimed concerts in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto. Through the years, she became a familiar name on The Artist Series on the C.B.C. Sunday morning and Wednesday night recitals. During the War years she did many of the “fills” for C.B.C when the war news could not get through, sometimes on an hour's notice. Irene played with the Ottawa Symphony, The Promenade Symphony in Toronto, the C.B.C Radio Orchestra, and several times with the Montreal Little Symphony. As a teacher, she headed the music department at Ashbury College. In her years of private lessons, Irene had many wonderful students who remained in touch with her. She also devoted time to teaching and lecturing in Chautauqua, N.Y. and Pittsburgh, Penn. To the delight of audiences, she resumed her concert career in her 80's and 90's as a duo pianist giving benefit concerts for The King’s Daughters Meals on Wheels. Irene was a former President of The Ottawa Music Club, The Ottawa Branch of The O.R.M.T.A and the Ottawa Division of The Canadian National Competitions. She was an Honorary Member of the Ottawa Music Club, The Laurentian Music Club, The Ottawa Branch of the O.R.M.T.A. and The Ottawa and Hull District local of the Musicians Union. Irene was awarded the gold medal in piano competitions of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, the Hazel Ireland Eaton Piano Scholarship at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto and she received a Bachelor of Music Degree from Bishops University, Lennoxville, Quebec. She also wrote a book, “Chord-A-Tune”, to help students learn to play by ear. Irene loved to paint, golf, and spend time with her grandchildren for whom she was a tremendous role model. The family would like to thank the staff at the Palisades for their exceptional care and John Singlehurst for his extraordinary and unwavering support and friendship. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Kiwanis Ottawa Music Festival or The Ottawa Branch of The Registered Music Teacher’s Association Piano Scholarship Fund.
